Rectangular hollow section (RHS) curving

RHS, short for rectangle hollow section, is a frequently used type of structural steel. Its flat surface allows for easy joining and welding with minimal edge preparation necessary.

As with almost all metal bending processes, the tighter the bend, the more difficult it becomes. Similarly, curving rectangular sections with thinner walls is more difficult than curving thicker walls.

We have curved 200x100x4mm RHS the easy way (on flat) to 2400mm radius. By comparison, a thicker wall of 6mm can be curved twice as tight to 1200mm radius.

Capabilities

Refer to the Capacity chart below as a guide to mild / carbon steel rectangular tube curving options offered by Advanced Metal Curving. If your RHS size is not listed below, don't assume it cannot be done! Please don't hesitate to contact us to enquire.

Please note:

  • Note 1: Only as part circles.

  • Material size: This list is a guideline based on MILD Steel. We curve any and all sizes and thicknesses in between. If your project requires a different material thickness or type such as aluminium, please contact us with the details.

  • Orientation: Refers to the direction of the curve for members of unequal size, such as RHS or Angle. These can be rolled multiple ways. Please refer to the images above to specify the orientation.

  • Minimum inside radius: Refers to the tightest radius possible, measured to the inside of a continuous curve. Altering material type, thickness, or the addition of straight legs, tangents or multiple radii will affect the minimum radius.

  • Minimum green required per length: Green is the term used to describe the material (wastage) required on either end for the machine to take hold. This material remains straight and needs to be removed after rolling i.e. 500mm green per length = 250mm green each end. The remaining length will be usable curve. How much green depends on the section size, orientation and machine type.

  • Material supply: AMC can supply or customer free issue.

  • Transport notes: AMC have an overhead crane and forklift on site to handle loading / unloading of over-sized semi-trailers. Dimensions and weight can be supplied to assist you to organise freight.
